On October 1, 2025, on the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, the first memorial sign in honor of the 18th Army Aviation Brigade named after Igor Sikorsky was unveiled in the Square of Memory of Heroes of Ukraine in Poltava, and a new city tradition of honoring military units of the Poltava community was established.
The initiative was launched by the Poltava City Council's Department of Veterans Affairs in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Cultural Forces, which began implementing the project “Defenders Nearby.”
The idea of the project is to install commemorative plaques to the military units of the Poltava garrison on the circle of rays of the largest state flag of Poltava region, located in the square.
Currently, four commemorative plaques have already been installed here: in honor of the 18th Army Aviation Brigade named after Igor Sikorsky, the 225th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, the 10th Army Corps, and the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Poltava region.
In the future, the organizers plan to install commemorative plaques for all branches and types of troops, units, and formations of the Poltava garrison.
The Defenders Nearby project is about respect, unity, and responsibility to remember and thank those who defend Ukraine every day.
