On 26 April 1986, one of the worst man-made disasters in human history occurred: the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The explosion at the fourth reactor changed the lives of millions of people, left behind an exclusion zone, and became a symbol of the dangers of the uncontrolled use of nuclear energy.
In 2026, Ukraine and the world will mark the 40th anniversary of the tragedy. This is not only a day of mourning, but also an opportunity to reflect on the significance of remembrance, responsibility and human courage.
The events of Chornobyl have left a deep mark on every region of Ukraine. In Poltava, too, the memory of the heroism of the liquidators and the tragedy of thousands of families is preserved. Around 17,000 residents of Poltava took part in the clean-up operation following the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
A memorial to the victims of the Chornobyl disaster has been erected in the city — a place where commemorative events are held every year. People come here to honour those who sacrificed their lives or health while dealing with the aftermath of the accident.
Furthermore, in 2016, by order of the Head of the Poltava City Council, one of the city’s central streets was renamed Heroes of Chornobyl Street, becoming yet another important symbol of remembrance that serves as a daily reminder to residents and visitors of the city’s heroism and tragedy.
It is important that the memory of the tragedy is reflected not only in the symbolic landscape of the city, but also in the community’s concrete decisions. A resolution of the 39th session of the Poltava City Council dated 15 September 2023 provides for social support for those affected: children who suffered as a result of the Chernobyl disaster are entitled to free admission to Poltava’s municipal museums.
Forty years after the tragedy, Chornobyl remains a reminder of humanity’s responsibility towards nature and future generations. The memory of these events shapes not only historical consciousness but also the values of safety, solidarity and humanity.
