On the eve of the professional holiday of healthcare workers, a themed excursion entitled "Pages of Poltava's Medical History" took place in Poltava. The event was organised by the Department of Culture, Youth and Family of the Poltava City Council in conjunction with the city's municipal museums as part of the traditional charity initiative "Museum Workers Thank Medical Workers". This is the fifth time the event has been held in the city as a gesture of gratitude for the daily work of medical professionals.
The participants of the excursion were employees of the city's medical institutions. A special route was prepared for them, covering landmarks related to the history of medicine in Poltava, starting from the 18th century.
During the walking tour, participants learned about the first zemstvo hospital, the almshouse, the activities of military medical institutions during the war years, local philanthropists who supported the development of medicine, medical institutions during the empire and Soviet eras, as well as famous doctors who left their mark on the city's history. The focus is on the names of Ivan Kotliarevskyi, Mykola Sklifosovskyi, Oleksandr Volkenstein, Oleksandr Nesvitskyi, Panas Mirny, Oleksandr Maltsev and other lesser-known but no less significant figures associated with Poltava medicine.
The tour route passed through notable places in Poltava, starting with the old hospital quarters, with stops at historic buildings associated with medical institutions of the past. The atmosphere of the event was complemented by archival photos and excerpts from the memories of doctors and patients. At the end, visitors had the opportunity to relax in the cosy coolness of the garden of Ivan Kotliarevskyi's house.
The organisers of the event are sincerely grateful to everyone who took part and emphasise that the initiative will continue, because supporting medical professionals is a manifestation of our humanity, respect and care for those who stand guard over life every day.
